Race 1 - 1:30pm
THE
JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE (CLASS 1) (Grade 1)
MR
ADJUDICATOR, SALDIER (FR), SAYO, STORMY IRELAND (FR) and SUSSEX RANGER (USA)
wore earplugs throughout the race.
Following the race, Barry Geraghty reported that
APPLE'S SHAKIRA (FR), which started favourite and finished fourth, ran too
free. APPLE'S SHAKIRA (FR) was routine tested.
Race 2 - 2:10pm
THE
RANDOX HEALTH COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 1) (Grade 3)
BLEU
ET ROUGE (FR), SANDSEND (FR) and WHISKEY SOUR (IRE) wore earplugs throughout
the race.
Ms K. Walsh, the rider of SANDSEND (FR), was unseated approaching the final
hurdle. After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no other
horse or rider was involved and was caused by the gelding sustaining an
injury and unseating Ms Walsh.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that TIGRIS RIVER (IRE),
which was pulled up, lost its left fore shoe and LE
RICHEBOURG (FR), unplaced, and BRELADE, unplaced, both lost their right hind
shoes. Nick Williams reported that FLYING TIGER (IRE), which started
favourite and finished unplaced, did not stay the trip in the ground, which
was Soft, Heavy in places on this occasion. The Veterinary Officer
subsequently reported that a post-race examination of the gelding during routine
testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3 - 2:50pm
THE
ALBERT BARTLETT NOVICES' HURDLE RACE (CLASS 1)(Grade 1) (Registered as THE
SPA NOVICES' HURDLE RACE)
Permission
was given for CALETT MAD (FR) to go early to post and MULCAHYS HILL (IRE) to
be mounted in the chute.
BALLYWARD (IRE) and FABULOUS SAGA (FR) wore earplugs throughout the race and
SANTINI wore earplugs which were removed at the start.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that CHEF DES OBEAUX
(FR), which was pulled up, and ENNISCOFFEY OSCAR (IRE), unplaced, both lost
their right hind shoes and CHRIS'S DREAM (IRE), unplaced, MULCAHYS HILL
(IRE), which was pulled up, and PAISLEY PARK (IRE), unplaced, all lost their
left fore shoes.
Race 4 - 3:30pm
THE
TIMICO CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Grade 1)
TOTAL
RECALL (IRE) wore earplugs throughout the race.
David Mullins, the rider of TOTAL RECALL (IRE), had remounted having fallen
at the third last fence and ridden back without his horse being examined by a
Veterinary Surgeon. The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed.
Mullins’s explanation that he had been given clearance by a person he
believed to be a Veterinary Surgeon was accepted.
Richard Johnson, the rider of the winner, NATIVE RIVER (IRE), was suspended
for 7 days and fined £6,550 for using his whip above the permitted level from
approaching the second last fence.
Following the race, Robbie Power reported that OUR DUKE (IRE), which was
pulled up, was never travelling. OUR DUKE (IRE) was routine tested. The
Veterinary Officer reported that EDWULF, unplaced, suffered from mild heat
exhaustion post-race.
Race 5 - 4:10pm
THE
ST. JAMES'S PLACE FOXHUNTER CHALLENGE CUP OPEN HUNTERS' STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS
2)
The
Veterinary Officer reported that a kit bag search of Alan Fleming, the
trainer of FOXROCK (IRE), revealed possession of Pro-Dosa
Boost Oral Paste, an electrolyte trace element replacer. The trainer, the
Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer and the Veterinary Officer were
interviewed. The explanation of the trainer that it was unopened and had not
been used was noted. Being satisfied that the gelding had received only
normal food and water by mouth on the day of racing, the Stewards allowed
FOXROCK (IRE) to run and the gelding was routine tested. They further
confiscated the substance, ordered that it be tested, and referred the matter
to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority.
Permission was given for PREMIER PORTRAIT (IRE) to be mounted in the chute.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that CAID DU BERLAIS
(FR), placed fifth, lost its right fore shoe,
WARDEN HILL (IRE), unplaced, lost its left fore
shoe and WELLS DE LUNE (FR), which was pulled up, lost its left hind shoe.
The Veterinary Officer further reported that BURNING AMBITION (IRE), which
started favourite and finished unplaced, suffered from mild heat exhaustion,
VOLNAY DE THAIX (FR), unplaced, suffered from heat exhaustion post-race and
WARDEN HILL (IRE) suffered from mild heat exhaustion.
Race 6 - 4:50pm
THE
MARTIN PIPE CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS' HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 2)
CARTER
MCKAY, BURROWS SAINT (FR) and DEAL D'ESTRUVAL (FR) wore earplugs throughout
the race.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of DREAM BERRY (FR), ridden
by Jonjo O'Neill and trained by Jonjo
O'Neill, which was held up in the early stages before being asked for an
effort approaching the final hurdle and running on to finish seventh, beaten
by 10¼ lengths. The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown
recordings of the race; the Handicapper offered observations and the
Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding
failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider stated that his instructions
were to drop DREAM BERRY (FR) out and get the gelding to settle and ask for
an effort approaching the final hurdle. The rider added that he had been
denied a clear run down the back straight and suffered slight interference
leaving the back straight, which resulted in him being further back than
ideal. The trainer stated that the ride accorded with his instructions apart
from being unable to take closer order at the top of the hill. Their
explanations were noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that DISCORAMA (FR),
placed second, suffered from mild heat exhaustion and MELROSE BOY (FR),
unplaced, had been struck into.
Race 7 - 5:30pm
THE
JOHNNY HENDERSON GRAND ANNUAL CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1)
(Grade 3)
Permission
was given for GINO TRAIL (IRE) to go early to post, VANITEUX (FR) to go early
to post and be mounted in the chute and DOITFORTHEVILLAGE (IRE) to wear a
hood in the Parade Ring.
FOXTAIL HILL (IRE) wore earplugs throughout the race.
The Starter reported that BRIGHT NEW DAWN (IRE) was reluctant to race. The representative
of Venetia Williams and the Starter were interviewed and shown recordings of
the start. The representative stated that while the gelding had refused to
race at Leicester, the application of sheepskin cheek pieces on its previous
start at Chepstow had appeared to help but BRIGHT NEW DAWN (IRE) had run too
freely. He further added that the cheek pieces would be reapplied in the
future. The trainer was informed that any future similar behaviour from the
gelding may result in the horse being reported to the Head Office of the
British Horseracing Authority.
The winner, LE PREZIEN (FR), appeared to show improved form, compared with
its previous run at Cheltenham on 16 December 2017 where the gelding finished
eighth of ten, beaten by 35¾ lengths. The representative of Paul Nicholls’
explanation that the gelding had jumped poorly on its previous run and on
this occasion got into a better rhythm which in turn improved its jumping was
noted. LE PREZIEN (FR) was routine tested.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that ROCK THE WORLD
(IRE), unplaced, had bled from the nose, THREE STARS (IRE), placed fifth,
lost its left hind shoe and TOWNSHEND (GER), which was pulled up, lost its
right fore shoe.
