Richard was spotted in London, on 3 June, by a paparazzi photographer … so I’m not republishing those photos!

And yesterday, it was announced that he has been engaged for a new project, a military/political thriller called Trinity, for Netflix.

It’s been created by Jed Mercurio, like Bodyguard, and filming will be based at North Shore Studios in Vancouver, in western Canada.

According to ‘What’s on Netflix’, production begins on Monday 7 July and will continue until early November.

So it’s bye bye to British shores for the time being … but, as always, I look forward to his return!

Netflix has greenlit a new thriller series from Jed Mercurio with Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden attached to star.

Variety has learned that the series, titled “Trinity,” has been picked up for eight episodes. The official logline states, “A heroic female Naval Officer (Mbatha-Raw) becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic Secretary of Defense (Madden), only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.”

Mbatha-Raw’s character is named Commander Katherine Decker, described as serving “as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.” Madden will star in the series as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one,” per the character description.

Mercurio serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the series under his Hat Trick Mercurio (HTM) banner. Jimmy Mulville of HTM will also executive produce along with Wendy Mericle (“Willow,” “Arrow”). Michael Cuesta (“Dexter,” “Homeland”) will direct and executive produce the first and second episodes. 20th Television is the studio.

The series reunites Mercurio and Madden, as the two previously collaborated on the hit series “Bodyguard.” Mercurio created that show with Madden starring. It received widespread acclaim upon its release, including a Golden Globe win for Madden and an Emmy nod for best drama series. Mercurio’s other credits include “Bodies,” “Line of Duty,” and “Critical.”

In addition to “Bodyguard,” Madden is known for starring as Robb Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and currently stars in the Amazon spy series “Citadel.” In film, Madden starred in the Marvel film “Eternals” and has also been in features like “1917,” “Rocketman,” and Disney’s live-action “Cinderella.”

He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Sloane Offer.

Mbatha-Raw currently stars in the Apple TV+ series “Surface,” which aired its second season earlier this year. Her other TV credits include “The Morning Show” at Apple as well as “Loki” at Disney+, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” at Netflix, and the critically-acclaimed “San Junipero” episode of “Black Mirror.” She has starred in features such as “Concussion,” the live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” and “Misbehaviour.”

She is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown Group, Anonymous Content, and Hansen Jacobson.

Mercurio is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Mericle is repped by CAA, Literate, and Hansen Jacobson.

One project that has been on our radar for several months is Trinity, a new high-stakes military/political thriller set to consist of eight episodes for its first season. Today, Netflix officially unveiled the project alongside its two lead stars: Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden.

Jed Mercurio leads the project as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with the prolific British writer known for working on well-known projects like Line of Duty, the Netflix Original series Bodyguard, and Trigger Point. He’s producing under his banner, Hat Trick Mercurio Productions.

The synopsis is as follows: “As geopolitical tensions escalate toward crisis, a heroic female Naval Officer becomes entangled with the outwardly charismatic and enigmatic Secretary of Defense, only to uncover that he may be at the center of a dangerous conspiracy.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is on board to star throughout the series as Commander Katherine Decker. Per official descriptions, “she serves as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.”

This marks Mbatha-Raw’s sixth major Netflix Original project, having previously featured in Irreplaceable YouEasyThe Cloverfield ParadoxLift, and of course, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. She’s also going to be co-starring in the upcoming Netflix film, The Woman in Cabin 10. Other well-known credits include Surface and Loki.

Co-leading is Richard Madden as Secretary of Defense Webb Preston. The official character description reads, “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one.”

Best known for roles on Game of Thrones and Rocket Man, this serves as Madden’s third major Netflix Original project following the film Ibiza and starring in the previously mentioned BBC co-production, Bodyguard.

Who’s on the directing team? Michael Cuesta will direct the first two episodes in addition to EP duties. The veteran director has worked on titles like HomelandDaredevil: Born Again, and Kill the MessengerLoren Yaconelli (The Walking Dead: Dead CityShameless) is also reportedly on board to direct.

20th Television, which has been collaborating with Netflix more frequently in recent years, is the studio behind the project. They’re behind Netflix’s upcoming series The Beast in Me and are also the same studio behind Nobody Wants This Season 2, set for an October 2025 return.

Production is set to begin imminently and is planned to start in Vancouver at North Shore Studios on July 7th, with a four-month shoot scheduled to wrap on November 5th, 2025.  Casting directors for the project include Corinne Clark, Jennifer Page, and Julie Tucker.

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio has begun work on a new TV thriller for Netflix, starring Richard Madden.

The pair previously collaborated on the 2018 miniseries Bodyguard, which starred the former Game of Thrones actor as a protection officer for politician Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes).

Showrunner Mercurio followed this with perhaps his best known work – the hit series Line of Duty, which ran on the BBC from 2012 to 2021.

Mercurio will reunite with Madden for the forthcoming thriller Trinity, which he will also write and executive produce.

The eight-part series will also star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays nuclear submarine commander Decker. Becoming involved with shady defence secretary Webb Preston (played by the former Game of Thrones star), she grows increasingly convinced that there’s a conspiracy afoot.

Knowing Mercurio’s work as we do, twists will ensue.

Reacting to news of the series being greenlit, fans shared their thoughts on Trinty’s potential over social media.

Gugu + Madden = must-see spy action, Netflix. Hype!’ exclaimed TrpstrLeonOG on X.

‘The casting director cooked with these two,’ said Joe_Teffo.

‘You got me at Richard Madden. Bring it on!’ commented deereads_novels.

‘Sold,’ said EggFlip, over on Reddit.

‘Here for this,’ agreed Logical-Balance1975.

Only a synopsis for the series has been released so far, reading: ‘A heroic female naval officer becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic secretary of defence, only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.’

Loki star Mbatha-Raw will play naval officer Decker, while Madden appears as the mysterious defense secretary.

With Mercurio on showrunner duties, he will share executive producer responsibilities with Hat Trick Studios’ Jimmy Mulville.

Meanwhile, the first two episodes will be written and directed by Daredevil: Born Again and Dexter director Michael Cuesta.

Mercurio may be looking to the future with his latest TV project, but fans aren’t ready to move on from his biggest hit just yet.

Earlier this year, star Martin Compston added fuel to the fire when he weighed in on rumours that a seventh series of the crime drama was in the works.

‘We’re always talking about possibilities and schedules and whatnot,’ he told The Sun.

However, he immediately dampened the flames by admitting: ‘Everybody’s got stuff going on at the minute, so I think anything, unfortunately, would be a way off.’

Fans remain hopeful that Bodyguard will return for a second series (Picture: BBC)

Elsewhere, others have held out hope that Bodyguard might return for a second series.

When the first season was released, Mercurio said that he would ‘absolutely’ bring the show back for a second series.

While that never emerged, producer Simon Heath teased as recently as 2021 that it might one day still be made.

‘Bodyguard is a big beast to put back together. I’m reasonably confident we will see it in due course,’ he told Metro.co.uk.

‘With Line Of Duty, again, we don’t know whether season six will be the last,’ he added.

Will Trinity fill the void?
